Recommended Cables and Equipment

Last updated on Mar 17, 2026

Using the right equipment alongside your XNET WIFI device ensures you get the best possible performance.

Ethernet Cables

Cable Type Max Speed Recommended?
Cat5 100 Mbps No — will severely limit your speeds
Cat5e 1 Gbps No — still a bottleneck for most plans
Cat6 1 Gbps (short runs) Acceptable for short distances
Cat6a 10 Gbps Yes — recommended
Cat7 10 Gbps Yes — recommended

Always use Cat6a or Cat7 cables between your XNET device and any downstream router, switch, or mesh system.

Mesh WiFi Systems

If you need whole-home coverage beyond what your XNET router provides, connect a mesh WiFi system to your XNET router's Ethernet port. Look for:

  • 2.5 Gbps Ethernet ports — avoids bottlenecking at the connection point
  • Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 — latest standards for best performance
  • Dedicated backhaul — keeps device traffic separate from mesh communication

Ethernet Adapters

Some devices (laptops, streaming sticks) do not have Ethernet ports. A USB-to-Ethernet adapter can provide a wired connection for better speed and reliability. Look for adapters that support at least 1 Gbps.

What You Do NOT Need

  • You do not need to buy a separate modem — your XNET device handles the cellular connection.
  • You do not need a phone line or coaxial cable.
  • You do not need a separate SIM card — one is included with your device.
